- Mind Reader Everything is peaceful, almost serene. It’s in the middle of a busy street. There’s heavy traffic, honking and shouting. Suddenly, a woman screams and there is a great commotion as people start to run in mass confusion. The camera moves through the crowd and we see a man has fallen from a skyscraper. He is an elderly East Indian man, named KIRAN. There is an odd, tranquil smile on the dead man’s face. Did he jump? Was it murder?
- SAMUEL DUPIN arrives to investigate. He talks to KIRAN’s girlfriend, MIRA, a middle-aged psychiatrist, who gives the detective KIRAN’s diary.
SAMUEL reads about one day KIRAN is heading home in his village and crosses a gang of thieves. The thieves are beating an old man who won’t tell them where he’s hidden his money. KIRAN urges them to stop. Knowing they will kill the old man if he doesn’t hand over his savings, KIRAN finds the money by reading the old man’s mind and gives it to the thieves. The thieves realize KIRAN’s value and kidnap him. Over time, KIRAN becomes a powerful member of the gang.
But a few of the thieves become resentful of KIRAN, believing he’s possessed by an evil spirit. In the middle of the night, they tie KIRAN up and throw him in the river but KIRAN frees himself and swims to shore.
KIRAN travels to Bombay where he breaks into a large house. He is interrupted when a beautiful young woman named AJALA comes home. KIRAN returns the next week in hopes of seeing AJALA again but instead finds her father, MR. BAWA, waiting there for him. He is the leader of a large criminal organization. MR. BAWA isn’t angry at KIRAN. Instead, he wants KIRAN to join his gang.
MR. BAWA teaches KIRAN to play poker. KIRAN uses his mind reading abilities to win lots of money. KIRAN, however, wins a poker game against the wrong man, a corrupt politician, who sends a couple of assassins to MR. BAWA’s house to kill KIRAN. But the alarm is raised and the two assassins flee. Knowing he will have to leave, KIRAN convinces AJALA to run away with him.
When they arrive at their new home, life is not as glorious as they imagined. KIRAN gets a job mopping floors at a hospital. He starts hearing voices wherever he goes . . . on the bus . . . at the hospital . . . on the street. He thinks he is being followed but he’s not sure. AJALA grows increasingly concerned and he becomes increasingly violent towards her.
One day, while KIRAN is at work, he gets into a fight with a co-worker he is convinced was sent to kill him. KIRAN escapes, leaves AJALA, and jumps onto a train which takes him to a temple in the countryside.
KIRAN stays there for months, eventually befriends MIRA. MIRA agrees to take KIRAN to North America. KIRAN hallucinates people are after him. This is where KIRAN’s diary ends.
SAMUEL travels to India to track down AJALA but is unsuccessful. He finds MR. BAWA who says he isn’t a gangster but runs an export/import business. He takes SAMUEL to his office to prove it. When SAMUEL asks MR. BAWA about his daughter, he replies he never had one. There is no AJALA.
SAMUEL returns to home to find the two assassins holding his wife hostage. SAMUEL asks the assassins if they killed KIRAN. They replied they were going to but he committed suicide before they could get to him. The two assassins threaten SAMUEL and then leave.
SAMUEL visits MIRA the next day and asks MIRA about AJALA. Did she really exist? MIRA admits she is in fact AJALA. After KIRAN left her, she tracked him to the temple but he didn’t recognize her. He kept calling her MIRA and so she just played along, assuming MIRA’s life. SAMUEL asks if she thinks KIRAN could really minds. AJALA pauses for a moment but then answers she doesn’t know. SAMUEL turns to go but then stops and asks one more question: “What about KIRAN’s smile?”
But before AJALA can answer, SAMUEL’s phone starts ringing. SONYA has gone into labour. SAMUEL tells AJALA he is about to have a baby.
“Perhaps that was what KIRAN’s smile was for,” AJALA says.
