Gone are the days of media wars. The old fashioned ones that used to play out between companies. But now most news outlets aren’t even worth fighting over. Some news outlets change hands, shifting from a mammoth organization to another.
Consider this: just about 25 years ago 50 organizations owned 90% of the media in the United States. Today only 6 organizations own 90% of the media in the United States.
Why should we care? Because it means the lack of choice. People are apathetic towards it because there is an illusion of choice. You don’t like CNN, you switch on Fox News. You don’t like Fox News, you switch on NBC.
As much as the media likes to hype up their own battles between Fox News and, well, everybody else, they really aren’t very meaningful anymore.
Will there ever be independent news ever again? The rise of small and medium businesses proves there is hope for journalism. There is more choice for consumers than ever before. It’s only a matter of time before that choice flows into the news organization.
